Bobby Barrera was on his way to retrieve a rice cache when a 500-pound Viet Cong land mine burst under his vehicle, causing it to erupt in flames. In shock, Bobby didn’t feel the pain immediately. But days later, that excruciating pain set in ... and he learned the full extent of his injuries.

Severe burns covered 40% of Bobby’s body! He sacrificed his left arm and right hand for America! His face remains severely scarred!

After a lot of anger and frustration, Bobby finally accepted that there were things he couldn’t do, that he’d have to ask for help. But time and time again, he’s repaid the help and support he received from others over the years.

As a high school teacher and counselor, a probation officer, the director of Family Support at Laughlin Air Force Base, and now as DAV National Commander, Bobby has gone way beyond “dealing with” his own challenges.

He commits his life to helping others with their struggles.

Bobby attributes his successes to what he calls the “Four S’s of Life: Self, Support, Sense of Humor and Spiritual.” And no one can argue that this recipe has worked for Bobby.
